SHM, STRUCTURAL DIAGNOSTICS AND ASSESSMENT METHODS FOR EXISTING BRIDGES
DENSE SENSING APPROACH

The performance assessment of existing structures plays a fundamental role when the assets of a networks are reaching the end of the design life, often with ongoing degradation processes, under increased traffic loads or unforeseen effects of accidental actions as well as climate change effects, with consequent need of structural interventions. The safety assessment of existing concrete bridges and viaducts differs from the design of new structures for several aspects, such as the choice of different target reliability levels for the assessment and the requirements in semi-probabilistic verifications, adequacy of performance analysis models, availability of performance indicators and information deriving from inspections, testing and continuous monitoring. The contribution outlines the vision and approach developed in the H2020 CSA IM-SAFE project currently under development, of which Sacertis Ingegneria S.r.l. is a project partner, with the aim to prepare the mandate for CEN for a further modification of the existing Eurocodes that promotes structural performance assessment based on monitoring, inspections and testing, and that supports an optimization of maintenance strategies, oriented towards increasingly preventive as well as predictive approaches.
