Abstract
x
THE PRACTICAL DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES
7th part - Steel structures - 2 examples

The main theme "The practical design of steel structures" has been proposed in 7 contributions published on various issues of Structural, with the aim of providing a useful trace for the design of steel structures, especially during the initial phases of the project.
It is addressed to young engineers or those who have not dealt with, or are not familiar with the world of steel structures design.
The published articles have been organized so as to give indication on the choice of the most frequent and significant steel structures (art. in Structural 215), propose a useful trace to the development of a project (art. in Structural 216), inform on the evolutionary knowledge of the various codes adopted in the past (art. in structural 217), provide a simplified method for the preliminary selection and design of the structures (art. in Structural 218), a reference to the attention on the control of drifts and displacements (art. in Structural 219) and some important details relevant to the steel structural connections (Structural articles in 221 and 223).
The intent was also to guide the structural engineers, with practical examples, towards the use of simplified and effective calculation and verification procedures, in order to acquire "the feeling of the results" that the current design codes, more and more complicated, they lose sight.
Finally, provide food for thought and sometimes self-criticism in the execution of one's own project.
The current texts as well as the calculation programs associated with them, even if valid, analize the codes to be utilised, and due to their complexity, propose the use of post-processors that guide the designer in verifying the structural elements with a "closed box" use.
Other texts even propose the use of pre-packaged programs for the definition of standardized types of connections.
As a final result the engineer is induced to do a "Medley" altogether, thinking he has successfully completed the project commissioned to him, but without making it as his own.
On the other hand, a correct design must be directed towards:
> the total control of the project in all its phases which must have only one responsible person, namely "the designer".
> the maximum simplicity in the choice of the structural schemes, the careful control of all critical issues linked to the problems of displacements, general stability, local buckling and congruence in the detailing.
To conclude this series of contributions two examples are proposed; the first as "sample of bad design", the second that faces to it, highlighting concepts of simplicity and coherence.
Learning and knowledge therefore also pass by reading the proposed examples, be they negative or positive.
