BASALT FRP REINFORCEMENT FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars are a non-corrosive alternative to carbon steel and can be used as internal reinforcement in concrete structures to extend their service life. To-date, material specifications and design guidelines for BFRP rebars exist making their use safe and efficient. Compared to traditional Grade 60 (420 MPa) steel, BFRP rebars have higher tensile strength (about three times higher), are lightweight (about one quarter of the weight of steel), do not rust, and offer a reduced carbon footprint for their production and deployment. Compared to other FRP rebar systems made of E-CR-glass, BFRP rebars have slightly higher elastic modulus, strength, and greater chemical stability. Thus, their use in reinforced concrete structures leads to durable and sustainable construction. The aim of this article is to succinctly present properties, benefits, and legal framework of BFRP rebars. In addition, some infrastructure and building examples on the use BFRP reinforcement are presented.

REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH FRP BARS:THE ITALIAN STATE OF TECHNICAL NORMATIVE

The use of fiber-reinforced composite materials to replace steel for the construction of structural concrete elements is a common practice in many countries of the world.
In Italy, although attention to this type of reinforcement has been manifested for some time and the scientific and technical community of our country has promptly engaged in the drafting of a Technical Document on the topic, published in 2007 by the CNR and entitled Instructions for the Design, Execution and Control of Reinforced Concrete Structures with Fiber-Reinforced Composite Material Bars, the Technical Standards for Construction issued by the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transportations (MIT) have so far not allowed unrestricted use. The use is subjected, on a case-by-case basis, to its approval by the Superior Council of Public Works.
Only in May 2018, MIT set up a Working Group for the drafting of two Guidelines: one on the identification, qualification and acceptance of FRP bars (QGL) and another on the design of concrete structures reinforced with such bars (DGL).
At the moment the two Working Groups have released the two draft Guidelines, which are currently being examined by a rapporteur commission in view of the discussion by the Assembly of the Superior Council of Public Works, the competent approval, with any amendments, and subsequent publication, the latter hopefully expected by the current year 2021.
The essential contents of the two Guidelines are summarized herein.

PROPORTIONING OF DAMPERS FOR SEISMIC REHABILITATION OF FRAME STRUCTURES

The study presents a simple and affordable design procedure suitable for the seismic rehabilitation of frame structures equipped with displacement-dependent dampers. The proposed framework is aimed at leading the designer to proportion the damper device(s) in order to achieve a desired structural performance level in compliance with the assumed limit states. According to the method, the structural system composed by frame and dampers is replaced by an equivalent single degree of freedom system, characterized through its secant stiffness and equivalent viscous damping; both parameters are defined in relation to a “performance point”, which is assigned on the basis of the allowable damage of the frame and on the first mode deformation of the main structure. The global stiffness and strength of the equivalent single degree of freedom damper are then distributed along the elevation of the frame in order to constrain the retrofitted frame to follow the first mode displacement of the bare frame. A case-study relevant to a reinforced concrete frame is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested procedure, obtaining a satisfactory agreement between the design target and numerical capacity curves. Non-linear dynamic analyses are further performed to assess the reliability of the methodology.

TENSEGRITY VERTICAL-AXIS MICRO WIND TURBINE

This work aims to carry out the preliminary design of a tensegrity vertical-axis micro wind turbine. It is a micro wind turbine based on a tensegrity structure and suitable to urban and suburban areas wind conditions.
Tensegrity structures are pin-connected frameworks whose elements are bars, which carry tension or compression, and cables, which carry tension only.
The scope of this design choice is to propose an innovative solution, capable of combining the advantages of the use of vertical-axis turbines for energy production with the unique tensegrity properties, like their architectural appeal, their lightness and easy of assembly and transport.
A FEM analysis was carried out on the base module in order to evaluate its structural response to external loads, and to perform a correct pre-dimensioning.
This study showed, thanks also to the realization of physical models, the feasibility of a vertical-axis micro wind turbine based on tensegrity modules.

CONTRIBUTO DEL CALCESTRUZZO AD UN PROGRESSO SOSTENIBILE
Mario Collepardi,
Silvia Collepardi

- a parità di classe di resistenza, impiegare cementi di miscela dove il cemento Portland viene parzialmente sostituito da aggiunte minerali come il calcare, la pozzolana naturale, la cenere volante, la loppa d’altoforno, ecc., con conseguente significativa riduzione del clinker;
- impiegare, se possibile, inerti lapidei alluvionali e di maggior diametro massimo che riducono l’acqua di impasto e, a pari rapporto acqua/cemento, riducono anche il dosaggio di cemento;

CONTRIBUTION OF THE CONCRETE TO A SUSTAINABLE PROGRESS

There are many initiatives to improve the environment sustainability, such as those based on the recovery of the wind energy and the solar power. In the present paper the contribution of the concrete to a sustainable progress is examined. Concrete is the construction material most used all over the world. The most important ingredient is the cement whose production needs a cooking process in a kiln at about 1450 °C with emission of big amounts of CO2 in the air responsible of the greenhouse effect and then responsible for the dramatic climatic changes such as the recent floods in Europe and China as well as the fires developed in North-American continent, in the Southern Europe and in the Nord of the African continent. In the present paper the concrete contribution to a sustainable progress consisting in a significant reduction in the CO2 emission has been studied. To achieve such a goal three parameters have been taken into account:
- to adopt, at a given strength class, mixed cements where Portland cement is partly replaced by mineral additions such as limestone, natural pozzolan, fly ash, blast furnace slag, etc. with the result that the clinker amount is significantly reduced;
 -to adopt natural aggregates with a greater maximum size so that the amount of mixing water is decreased and for the same water/cement ratio also the cement dosage is reduced;
- to use systematically high-range water reducing admixtures so that the amount of mixing water is decreased beyond 30 % with the result that, at a given water/cement ratio, also the amounts of cement and clinker are reduced;
Two practical examples based on these three choices indicate that, at given performances of the fresh mixture and hardened concrete, the decrease of the clinker production and that of the corresponding emission of CO2 is in the range of 36-54 %; moreover, a concrete with a sustainable progress leads to a significant reduction of the drying shrinkage (24-68 %) and then to a decrease of the cracking risk and durability loss of the reinforced structures.
